Ajax is an acronym for Javascript and XML Asynchronous. It is a group of interrelated web development techniques used for developing asynchronous web applications on the client-side and not on the server-side.

Web applications can send data to and receive data from a server with Ajax, and they can do so asynchronously or in the background. It can be achieved without interfering with the current page's display or behavior. Data can be retrieved using the XMLHttpRequest object, and XML is not necessarily needed to be used, despite the name.

Very often, instead, JSON is used, and these requests need not be asynchronous. Ajax is not a single technology, but it is a technology group instead. Combined with markup and style information, HTML and CSS can be used. But you can use HTML and CSS instead of only regular text to style it.

The browser loads and AJAX engine rather than loading a web page at the beginning of the session. This AJAX engine was written in JavaScript itself, which renders the interface and the server communication. The AJAX enables the interaction of the user with the application to occur asynchronously, regardless of server communication. The website is able to send data and request it. Without impacting the current page, which is the core principle of single-page applications, the data can be sent to and from the server in the background.

XML is just a type of data that at that time was common and was the equivalent of JSON at that time. It is syntactically similar to HTML but does not specify an HTML-like presentation. It simply reflects the knowledge and relations between them. Both XML and JSON are merely data formats. API's do not respond to HTML, but JSON consists of key-value pairs of pure data and looks almost exactly like JavaScript objects. Due to its similarity to JavaScrip, it is popular today.
